Sr Debbie Pike, Judy Hopkins &SN Kate Mills
Probably the most familiar faces at the Jersey Diabetes Centre are those of the Diabetes Specialist Nurses Sisters Judy Hopkins and Debbie Pike. Their role is key to the ability of the Centre to meet the needs of those with the condition, offering day-to-day support for people with Diabetes and their families.
Working with the team led by Dr Peter Bates, Judy and Debbie offer advice, education, information and general Diabetes care. Diabetes is a chronic disease and it is vital that those who have been diagnosed are equipped to know how to learn to live with their condition.
The nursing team all have a specialist qualification in Diabetes care and are available for advice and support on all aspects of Diabetes for both patients and relatives/carers.
They liaise with GPs and other health care professionals and have played a vital part in the success of the awareness of the condition generated by Diabetes Action Jersey. One of their tasks is to ensure that the newly diagnosed are fully aware and understand the implications of their condition. They make frequent visits to schools and youth groups to create an understanding of Diabetes and awareness amongst young people of how the condition can be avoided. They also regularly attend courses to keep up to date with the latest developments.
